The NCI curriculum focuses on alternatives to restraint and seclusion and incorporates advocacy concerns; person centered planning concepts and has been formatted to include small group activities and adult learning teaching strategies.

The NCI manual and the teaching package that all NCI Instructors will be using is a clean, coherent and teachable format. The material is organized into Part A (prevention) and Part B (physical) and this make up what is called the “NCI Core”. For most agencies the NCI Core package will be sufficient to train direct care and administrative staff.

The more challenging physical techniques (therapeutic holds, some complex releases, chair restraints, two or more person walks and carries) have been moved into an Optional Techniques category that requires additional training time and also special training for the NCI Instructor. This package is designated the NCI Core Plus training and would need the approval of the provider agencies Human Rights Committee for the use of the optional techniques.

The State has designed NCI Certificates for NCI Core (A and B), Part (A) only (Prevention), and NCI Core Plus for participants. They have NCI A (Prevention), NCI Core Instructor and NCI Core Plus Instructor Certificates that can be awarded to you once you are certified as an NCI Instructor.
